Chapter 11

Will’s news hit me like a wrecking ball. Over the ringing in my ears, I heard Kathy’s panicked voice,

“What does this mean? What are we going to do?”

Will put a hand on her shoulder. “This is why I didn’t want to tell you. Try to stay calm, okay? We’ll find him. Don’t forget it’s not unprecedented for Dad to do something on impulse; it doesn’t mean we should go into panic mode.”

“That’s true. I’m sorry.” She palmed her eyes and leaned against Tray who wrapped his arms around her.

Will’s words gave me little reassurance as I studied his drawn face and the deep circles under his eyes. Clearly he was more worried than he let on.

My mind flashed to Henry Edwards, John Edward’s uncle whose wedding I had attended a few short months ago. I thought about what happened the last time Henry left town without telling anyone. Found in a ditch, beaten and unconscious and with no memory of who he was or how it happened.

What if at that moment Dad lay hurt and helpless somewhere with his family miles away and completely unaware?

I hugged myself around the middle to keep the biting fear at bay.

You’re overreacting. Nothing like that is ever going to happen to Dad.

“What if...” We all turned to Liam who looked troubled as he ran a hand through his surfer-dude hair.

“What if, what?” I prompted.

“I just thought...do we know for sure that this Tammy person is really who she says she is? She already misled you into thinking Nicolas went to Kentucky. What else is she lying about?”

“She’s who she says she is,” Will said. “I checked. She’s Bill Morrow’s daughter, the guy who lives next door to Dad’s cousin Edna. Once I started thinking back, I actually remembered her a little.”

“You did?” I was surprised. I barely remembered Bill Morrow, much less whether or not he had a daughter.

“Yeah. From the summers we spent down there as kids,” Will said. “I used to spend time over at Bill’s. He liked to hunt, and he taught me how to shoot a gun and let me do target practice on his property. I think Tammy lived in the city at the time, but she came to visit Bill once or twice while I was there.”

“And what about the murder case?” Tray asked. “Is she still a suspect?”

Will looked off to the side, seeming reluctant to answer. “We haven’t ruled her out, but she swears she never went near that weed killer and claims she was in the dog park at the time of Crawford’s death. Since all we have is her word, that’s not an alibi. As for the weed killer in Dad’s basement, the only fingerprints on the bottle were Dad’s. Though, that doesn’t mean the killer never touched it. He or she could’ve worn gloves.”

I remembered seeing Tammy wear latex gloves around the house, presumably to handle her window cleaner. I’d taken note of them at the time because they were blue. I told them about it.
